If you're moving to Hanoi from Saigon, the US, Europe, or basically anywhere except Northern Vietnam, you're not prepared for what spring does to your laundry. This guide covers what's actually available in Hanoi in 2026 — services, pricing, climate hazards, expat-friendly options. Plus the strategies that work and the ones that don't.
The climate fact you need to know first
Hanoi has four real seasons, unlike Saigon. Three of them affect your laundry significantly:
- Spring (Feb-April) — mùa nồm: 90-100% humidity. The air is so saturated with moisture that clothes hung indoors literally don't dry — they stay wet for days and grow mold. Floor stays wet. Wardrobes mold. This is the single biggest reason expats struggle with laundry in Hanoi.
- Summer (May-August): Hot and humid 35-38°C, somewhat similar to Saigon but with sudden heavy rains. Outdoor drying works but unpredictable.
- Autumn (Sep-Nov): Best for laundry. Mild sun, breeze, humidity 60-70%. Outdoor drying is fast.
- Winter (Dec-Jan): Cold and dry 10-18°C. Clothes dry fast but wool, down, and structured pieces need dry cleaning to avoid damage.
The mùa nồm season is non-negotiable. You either invest in a dryer, a dehumidifier, or a laundry service. There is no fourth option.
Laundry services available in Hanoi
1. Self-service laundromats
Hanoi has roughly 60-80 self-service laundromats concentrated in Hai Bà Trưng, Cầu Giấy, Đống Đa, and emerging in Tây Hồ. Coin-operated or token machines.
- Pros: Cheap (10-18k đ/kg), available 24/7 in many locations
- Cons: You haul laundry there + back, usually no English signage, machines vary in quality
- Best for: Students, budget travelers, bachelors who don't mind hauling
2. Pickup-and-delivery laundry services
The fastest-growing segment in Hanoi. Apps and Zalo OAs offer pickup-wash-deliver in 24-48 hours. Major operators include local Hanoi chains; international brands have entered through partner models. Pricing typically 25-40k đ/kg.
- Pros: Door-to-door, industrial machines + proper drying (solves mùa nồm), photo updates via Zalo
- Cons: Most apps are Vietnamese-only; English support is rare outside premium services
- Best for: Working professionals, families, anyone short on time
3. Dry cleaning shops
Hanoi has a long-standing dry cleaning tradition — many of the city's expensive ao dai dressing, wool coats, and silk garments need professional dry cleaning given the cold-dry winter. 100+ dry cleaning shops citywide, concentrated in Hoàn Kiếm, Ba Đình, Hai Bà Trưng.
- Pricing: Shirt 30-55k đ, suit set 130-200k đ, wool coat 150-280k đ, áo dài 80-150k đ
- Best for: Vest, áo dài, silk, wool, anything labeled "Dry Clean Only"
4. Hotel laundry (expensive, avoid)
Most Hanoi hotels charge 80,000-200,000 đ/kg — that's 3-5× market rate. Some 5-star hotels (Sofitel Metropole, Lotte, Pan Pacific) charge per-piece premium pricing where a shirt is 150-300k đ.
- Verdict: Use only if time-critical and you have an expense account. Otherwise pickup-and-delivery beats hotel laundry on every metric.
English-speaking laundry options in Hanoi
Bluntly: most Hanoi laundry services operate Vietnamese-only. Your options for English support:
- Premium serviced apartments (Pan Pacific Residences, Crowne Plaza West Hanoi, Lancaster Hanoi): in-house laundry with English concierge
- Tây Hồ area expat-targeted services: a handful of laundry pickup services serve the Tây Hồ expat community with basic English via Zalo
- Hotel laundry at any 4-5 star property: English staff but premium pricing
- Use Google Translate + Zalo with any local service — most are happy to work with translated messages
The English service gap is one of the things Giặt Ơi! plans to address when we launch Hanoi (late 2026 target).
The mùa nồm survival strategy
Three practical options ranked by effectiveness:
Option 1: Get a dryer (most expensive, most reliable)
A condenser or heat-pump dryer costs 12-25 million VND. Installation requires venting space. Best for families who plan to stay in Hanoi 2+ years.
Option 2: Pickup-and-delivery laundry service (best ROI)
Industrial dryers handle mùa nồm trivially. Most services charge mùa nồm surcharge of 5-15% but it's worth it. Send laundry every 2-3 days during the spring damp.
Option 3: Dehumidifier + indoor drying (cheap but slow)
A 12-liter dehumidifier costs 2-4 million VND. Run it 24/7 during mùa nồm in a closed room with clothes hung. Laundry dries in 2-3 days instead of staying wet forever. Combine with a fan blowing on clothes.
Garment-specific tips for Hanoi climate
- Wool coats: Winter favorite. Dry clean once per season, NEVER wash with water. Store with cedar/lavender sachets in summer to prevent moth damage.
- Áo dài (silk): Dry clean only. Hanoi has many specialist áo dài cleaners — they understand the embroidery and structure.
- Down jackets: Dry clean or specialist down-cleaning. Don't put in regular machine — feathers clump.
- Cotton everyday wear: Standard pickup-and-delivery 24h or industrial machine.
- Athleisure (spandex): Low temperature wash + air dry. The cold winter is fine for this; mùa nồm requires dryer.

| Dry cleaning suit (2-piece) | 130-200k đ |

Bottom line
Laundry in Hanoi is harder than in Saigon — mainly because of mùa nồm spring damp. Self-service laundromats are cheap (10-18k đ/kg) but require hauling. Pickup-and-delivery services (25-40k đ/kg) are the best value for working professionals. Dry cleaning is mature and reasonably priced. Hotel laundry is overpriced — almost always avoid. English-speaking options are limited; lean on Google Translate + Zalo for most services.
